i dont know the first thing about mbunas, but i think i remember reading somewhere the the blues were slightly more aggressive than the yellowns and that they should not be kept together, but i may be wrong, so wait for someone like c-man to reply first :)

I'd say no. Yes it CAN be done not during spawing time, but why go to the hassle of moving fish around every spawning.

Yes Barb is right, the yellow tend to be less aggressive than the blues.

You would also have a pretty big SIZE problem. Yellows only get to about....3-4". Electric Blue Haps on the other hand reach about 6-7".

The only real problem with this mix is size, ahlis get a bit too big for a 40gal tank, 55 minimum. My question is did you pick these 2 species only by the name, and if you did not know they are completely unrelated. There are many other species of equal color that dont have such colorful names. I have these 2 species mixed with a bunch of others in one of my tanks. In general unlike central and south americans africans arent very agressive and territorial so that wont be much of a problem. if you decide to get the yellow labs try to get 1 male and 3-4 females if possible, you may have to vent them or if the store is knowledgable they can do it for you. Yellow labs are peaceful for mbunas and unlike most mbunas have higher protein diets, ahlis are fairly unagressive except to conspecifics.
