So far whilst looking at current retail prices it seems that the "TOTA" is best value, having a RRP of $70 and having substantially more pomping power.

Anyone have any experience with any of these?

rmarrandino1, three of the 5 links i put up are from ebay.
those were the best in my price range i could find on .au ebay.

Lotus, thankyou for the link, was a good read.

Ive ordered the "Aqua One 103F Maxi Internal Power Filter", as i asked about it when i saw it in a LFS. it was priced $40 HIGHER in the shop than online, so i couldn't resist. Also the guy at the shop said it was a good filter.
The HOB just has such a small amount of flow, and their very nature makes me think that it will leave the tank with several dead spots.

Now since it is not going to offer the kind of biological and chemical filtration as a hang on, i will get a SMALL HOB or corner filter at a later date.
