Next month would have been a year since I got him. He produced many fry, but most were eaten.
He had been sick a few weeks earlier, but it looked like he finally healed. I should have seen the signs. Before, the fins were always clamped. Also, he took to hiding a lot, something he's not known for. He wasn't aggressive when he ate the flakes, and just these past few days, he was avoiding the food I fed.
This morning he was hiding behind the heater. I remember earlier when I first joined this forum, people said that hiding behind the heater is a sign of "near-death." All other fish look healthy. I did a retest today and Nitrites and Ammonia all equal zero.
I also took out the ruler and measured him. He was exactly 2 inches (without the tail). With the tail, he was a near 3.25 inches. They say swordtails can get to four inches and live for 2 to 3 years. I wonder how large he would have been if he had survived.
R.I.P.
