A few weeks ago I noticed a BIG clutch of snail eggs up under the LED hood on my 20 long. This really caught me off-guard because I've had a single black and a single gold mystery snail in this tank since February. The black was a LFS purchase and has grown golf-ball size. The gold was a petsmart purchase and is about half the size of the black. I do nothing special for these guys aside from an occasional blanched veggie.

The first batch never took (just seemed to harden up), but apparently the 2nd did! I noticed a bunch of cute little gold buggers cruising around the tank today.

I plunked in a weighted pc of zucchini to keep them occupied.

Like I've mentioned before, this is funny because I've had ZERO luck with mystery snails in my planted 10 and 55g tanks. They live anywhere from a few weeks to a few months and die, while my fish are vibrant and healthy in those tanks. No adds that would negatively effect inverts that I'm aware in those tanks.

Freshly, how big were the individual eggs in the egg mass? I've got baby snails appearing in my tank, and I'd like to try and find the egg sac. I know they weren't introduced with plants or anything.

Mulder, the individual eggs are very small. Sounds gross, but the egg clusters look like those baby corn cobs you see in Chinese food.

This particular gold mystery snail has laid 6 or more clusters since I first posted this, but none have hatched. I've probably got 15-20 pea sized babies cruising around from back in August. I'm just not sure how long to leave the clusters hanging under the tank hood. It's funny because the momma knew to stick the eggs in an area that gets misted with water.
