You can never beat a free tank! Congrats!

I would go for a penguin or even better an emporer power filter with bio-wheel.

Doing a fishless cycle (like I am now on my 17gal)?

You can put in 2 (max 3) fancy goldfish and skip on the heater? I love my golds!

That, or get a heater and go for a livebearer tank, 4-5 mollies, 4-5 guppies, a couple ottos.

Nice to hear about the great deal heh.

As for the fish i would first pick out some fish your interested in and post them here. We can then help you to setup a nice friendly community tank with the fish that you like.

Make sure you pick your fish that are more for community and not some giant red devils or pacus or something lol.

Yea sure Iggy I'll go for fishless cycling...

As for the fish I like sword tails and guppies, but I had problem with guppies previously. I think because of the pH of my tap water being around 8.2 all (3) of em died.
May be I can have Mollies and Sword tails.. and I dont know....

as for fish for the tank, Cories are always great ;) And dwarf gouramies are nice, and so are tiger barbs. You already have platies in one of your tanks, according to your signature, so since mollies and swords are quite similar, why not get something different?

Go for Dwarf Gouramis! They're really colorful, and gennerally mild in temperment. 2 or 3 Powder Blue or Neon Blue, and maybe some balloon mollies and rummy-nose tetras would really make it a nice tank. As for bottom feeders... Maybe a clown plecostomus, 3 or 4 Khuli Loaches and maybe even a few ghost shrimp!

P.S. Congrats on getting your tank for free... I've got a similar story with my 10 gallon... Friend with 55 gal got sick of it and I got everything free. (fish and everything) It did need some sprucing up plant wise, and I added a Powder Blue and a Neon Blue Dwarf Gourami, and they're doing great.... okay, I'm finally done with this message.

Congrats on the tank! Don't you just love it when something like that drops in your lap? That's how I got my 75 gal.

As for what you can keep, well, you gotta keep what you like, but I will be more than happy to suggest what I would do with a 22 gallon tank:

1.) Mollies - 4 Balloon, 4 Lyretail, and 5 kuhli loaches

or

2.) Tiger Barbs - 8 regular (orange & black) and 4 or 5
cory cats

This is just what I would do. Heavily planted with some rocks and driftwood. I wholeheartedly endorse these fish. Out of all the fish I have ever kept, and I have kept alot, these are my faves.

Sorry was busy over the weekend, actually the guy who gave me the tank was selling it, but after meeting me he said take it for free and with that money but a filter and heater... cool ain't it!!

Yeah I was also thinking something like tiger barbs (6), Blue Gouramis(2) and Cories (2)

tiger barbs or rasboras or rummy-noses, and a pair of kribs or rams would be nice.

penguins, emperors, aquaclears--none of which you can go wrong with for filtration.

heaters? i like visutherms, ebo-jaegers.... thats about it.
