Use a siphon . . . get yourself a 6' length of clear 1" Inside Diameter hose from the LPS or hardware store. It obviously won't work well with tanks on the same level.

But if you are determined to use a powered pump, you want to see how high they "lift" . . . the technical term is "head". As the distance of the lift increases, the gph decreases. There are also hand-cranked "transfer pumps" that might work as well.

A water pump is a waste of money. What I got at the fs is a strong powerhead hooked up to a garden hose with a simple screw attaching them at the head's exhaust. It works pretty fast if you get a strong enough head. You could use something else instead of the garden hose too. And beaver, I give those cichlids a few more months before its hell with fins in that tank.

Your tanks aren't that large -- how long could a water change take? A bucket really won't help with vacuuming your gravel.

I've heard people complain here that they haven't even vacuumed enough gravel before the water removal is complete! In response to that, I got a SMALLER diameter tube on my siphon -- it gives me time to clean the sand before I've removed the water I want to remove. And when replacing water, it adds it more gradually, which can't be a bad thing at all. :)

Why the rush? I like the whole procedure, actually. :) But maybe I'm a dork.

another thought.if yo use a pump to remove water it doesn't give you the option to gravel vac and that could be bad if you forget after a few times of waterchanges.i have toyed around with this idea too.i seen you don't like the way your python works huh.i tok out the on/off valve and just hooked up the hoses together.it works real good now.only thig is i can't use the re-fill option without swrewing on the hose to a faucet first, but thats not as much work as hauling buckets.
