Growing plants as more than a hobby

someone asked a question about breeding fish as a source of income, but what about plants? I know that you can sell the clippings off your plants and whatnot, but I was thinking more along the lines of having a plants-only tank, purely to grow them to sell. I've been browing aquabid and some other auctions, and it's almost horrifying how much some people charge for things like java moss, which I inadverdently brought home from the lfs with my cories and soon had at least a couple pints of. if it was a small tank, maybe the cost wouldn't be so high to set up lighting, and I think plant tanks are just as pretty...any thoughts?

Problem is where you would find places to buy them from you. Since most stores buy in mass quantities, it might not be worth their effort unless you had some really rare plants and all.... I dunno, don't take my word for it. I agree with you though - in my 20 long, I throw away pounds of clipping every week. I started out with about 6 Jungle Val plants, and now I have about 60, in about 4 months...

Selling plants is very feasible. First, you need to know how to grow just about everything, or at least a large selection. Then you need lots of space to grow lots of plants. You can sell them locally, possibly by trying to convice the LFS's that they need to buy their plants from you instead of wholesalers. Alternatively, you can set up a web site and sell them this way.

If you become successful, you would then need a supplier to maintain your stock, or a greenhouse to grow your own :)

hmmm...*intimidated*. how about just selling small quanities through aquabid or such? people there seem to sell clippings, so maybe I wouldn't hafta have a greenhouse (*chuckle* i wish~!) I even saw one person selling plants she was growing in mason jars...

Hehe, I was joking about the greenhouse! Selling them on aquabid would be fine. I know several that have good success selling online if you wanted to mass market your plants. But if you wanted to limit it, aquabid or ebay would be great.

I'd rather have a greenhouse. more than that, I'd rather have ten million tanks, and my own crew to keep them clean. but in the meantime, I think this fishkeeper is gonna try a hand at aquabid. what do you think I should start growing? java moss seems HUGE...

Java Moss (good quality, no brown stuff), christmas Moss, riccia fluitans is a definite, alternanthera reineckii sp. roseafolia, all anubias, all cryptocorynes, aponogeton crispus, glossotigma elatinoides, Myriophyllum tuberculatum v. red, rotalla rotundifolia, rotalla wallichii, and tiger lotus.

All good plants, all in high demand, almost all fairly hard to grow (well, what did you expect?) :D

Yes, get some A. reineckii that WONT DIE. Mine dies like crazy, but leaves little babies all over the place. I must have 20 babies. It grows really slow for me too, which is strange... Riccia would be nice. Or that glosstosima plant that is orange is cool! I'd pay for that.
