Gymnogeophagus balzanii

#1
Just picked up a new pair of G. balzanii. I've been wanting them forever. The shop's had them for months now but I always passed considering they're $30 each. Today I cracked and gave in for a pair. The sexes were pretty obvious but just to be extra sure the guy let me vent the pair myself. I've never seen a fish netted so easily BTW! Can't wait to plump these guys up! *SUPERSMIL

Couple Shot. Talk about sexual dimorphism!

Wow that male is simply stunning. I love it. How big are they now? And what size tank are they in? Are they just that mellow that allowed them to be net easily?
They're in a 60 gallon tank right now along with the sp. Yi, some angels, a pair of Nannacara anomala and two groups of catfish. The tank is small but so are the fish. The male balzanii is the biggest/bulkiest at the moment @ about 4.5". I have two sp. Yi about the same size but not nearly the same bulk. I just upgraded to the 60gl last week for the sp. Yi and now I'm planning yet another upgrade to the 80 by next week. They should be good in there for quite a bit.
The balzanii were totally mellow. I pointed out which one I wanted and they all stood completely still, dude brought the net up under the fish and scooped them out, no chasing, no startling, I was amazed. Hopefully they're that easy to net when I want to move them into the 80. *crazysmil

Thanks for the kind words Monoxide!

I agree, that male is gorgeous. And he does look like a bit of a pig lol. I would say you got your money's worth. I don't think I'd mind to have a pair myself actually.
I love him! He's soooo mellow. First thing he got when introduced was a facefull of the dominant male Yi flaring and showing and tail flapping and he just flared and watched like "ok, I'll watch your little show". The Yi kept trying to get a rise out of him but he didn't move. Then he got bored of watching the Yi and started looking for food! I love the pair, they're really cute especially when they're together. Sifting together, swimming from one side to the other together, watching the dizzying catfish together. lol

grrrrr....I found some juvies on aquabid......

I was wanting to break DOWN my 65 gallon tank before the baby got here, not get more fish lol. The Mrs's fell in love with them, but the guy on Aquabid in the Oregon and we just don't want to pay the shipping right now.

I really do like them and I actually think adults would go good with my crew in my 75 gallon. I might have to dust off some old semi-local contacts and see what I can't find to skip the shipping charges. But then I wouldn't know what to do with my Gold Saum once he grew up...bah

This is all your fault straitjacket!!!! :p
