I've just got one of these second hand. Tank and stand seem OK, but what's the verdict out there on this BioLife filter - are they any good, high maintenance maybe?

No replies?! ho hum!
since I've already set it up, let me answer this post myself (how much of a fish idiot does that make me?)
basically, my view is that this biolife filter is pants, it only cycles the tank 3.3 times per hour and only a fraction of that is filtered by the wet/dry stage.
it would also be expensive to maintain as directed in the manual and take up too much space in the tank

am ripping it out and replacing!

Hi TaffyFish,

Did you end up ripping out your bio life filter? i have the same tank as you and found the filter to be quite good. what did you replace it with?

also what do you think of the lighting? I have put two power glo tubes in which are the brightest i can get for the hood. I'm trying to grow plants so wanted as much light as possible.

thanks

Hi Graeme,

Yes, I ripped it out - do you want it as a spare? I've also a spare motor and a fair bit of spare media too which is quite pricey isn't it? You're more than welcome to the lot for a little more than the cost of postage. Let me know if you want it.

The lighting is very good, works off bog standard starters too. Probably a very good tank/filter for a planted set up especially if the fish aren't too dirty. I think I've a pair of AquaGlo tubes. The previous owner reckoned he hadn't changed the tubes in 6 years!!....and wondered why he had algae problems!!

I'm using it for cichlids so it's rocks and plastic plants only, there are now 2 Eheim internals which are a lot less obvious than the huge black box and turn the tank over more than twice as often. The electric junction box means the tank still runs from a single power point.
