Try water mixed with vinegar and if that doesnt help, fill up the tank and let stand for a fews days until the 'stains' come off.

Amen with the vinegar.  It's a mild acid, after all, and it does do a number on hard water stains.  I use it all the time to get the hard water deposits off my tank lids, and (knocking on wood.  My head, specificly) no dead fish yet......

Also works great as a glass cleaner much better than other 'glass cleaners' because it does not streak.

I would use it without water(the vinegar) Those deposits suck. I too have this problem mostly on my glass hoods.

Vinager didn't work however...I had to use a product called "Lime-away"

If you have to...you must. It isnt too much of a problem if you rinse off real good a few times without the water in there.

hey all thank you very much for the info. after i wrote this i went to the LFS and he gave me a bottle of jungle brand Lime Off. It says it is safe to use on these deposits..... i think i might use the vinegar first and see what that does. i dont wanna take the chance with chemical.
thanks again all :)

Yes I had to use vinegar to get some off of my glass hood and it didn't do anything to my fish or the tank. That lime away stuff is good if nothing else works but I would try the vinegar first. ;D

The product I used is called "Lime-away"

It is actually for steam tables where I work. Usually you need to soak whatever you are treating in hot water for it to work effective.

Tell you the truth about I would do...just fill it up with water. Maybe over time you can get it off. Just dont let the water evaporate too far down next time.

well i got it almost clean now......i did the vinegar soaked rag...(used a agllon of vinegar but it worked. I used very soaked, dripping rags of pure vinegar and let soak on the stains...it came off with a razor blade....I let the rags soak on it fer about 3-4 hours on each side. its a 20 gallon long tank. now i can finally make my wife happy and start her neon/guppy tank..... ;D
