I was paging through a fishy book yesterday which suggested that your thermostat/heater should be at a 45 degree angle near the bottom of the tank.  My thermostat/heater is vertically i.e. straight top to bottom situated near the top of the tank.  Where have you guys placed your heaters?

Regards.

It seems to me that the best place to put a heater is as near as possible to the bottom of the tank.  Because Heat rises,  if you locate it near the bottom, the heater will provide a convection current and the heat provided will be better distributed through the tank.

Non-submersible heaters are pretty regulated to the verticle position because their thermostats and controls on top can't be wet.

My submersible is about an inch off the bottom at an angle across the back of my glass near the middle. I also like to put my airstone and other water current makers around the heater so water movement carries the heat away and reduces hot spots.
