Heaters for Small Tanks

I need to purchase a heater for one of my small tanks (30X30X25cm). T(here seem to be 2 basic kinds available in pet shops that I've seen. One has a thermostat on it and you can set the temperature to your liking. If the temperature drops below the set temp., it will automatically start working. If the temp. rises above the setting, it will automatically shut off.

Then there is another kind without a thermostat. With this (cheaper) kind, I believe that it is preset to 25 celcius or another temp. indicated on the package.

Please correct me if my description of the two above types of heaters is incorrect. Now, is a small heater without a thermostat enough for my small tank? My smallest tank already has one without a thermostat but I haven't had to use it yet.

a heater is something i wouldn't skimp on. if it costs a few more dollars, than it costs a few dollars. get one where you can adjust it and it will turn on as needed automatically. some fish may prefer warmer or cooler water than 25. there are some 10-watt heaters designed for small desktop tanks like this one:

don't get a heater without a thermostat, its just a recipe for disaster. Most 'small tank heaters' are thermostat-less. My favorite smal tank heater is the Hagen 25w subersible. They are cheapest at amazonmossey.com or usually pestmart has them in stock in the store.
