I've tried a variety of heaters, most of them have been ok and on the mark. However, a Visi-therm 100W I had was set at 77 and was cooking my fish to over 83. The thermostat must be faulty.

I really like my Hagen Tronic heaters. Never had an issue with one like I have the cheapo petsmart or no name brand ones. Whenever one of them fizzles (thats what I bought originally) I have replaced it with a hagen tronic and no issues.

ps, actually I picked up a hydor at a garage sale with a tank and its actually been going strong for a couple years now...

I have an old(at least 4 years) Rena-cal 150w,a couple of Visi-therms 50w(been going for 3 yrs) and 150w(yet to use it,it's there just in case) and a no-name 150w that was second hand when I got it and has now been in use by me for atleast 4 1/2 yrs.

I've had a bunch of different ones, too. The worst was the Aquatic Gardens ones that stopped working (2 of them) within a week.

I kind of like the Visitherm Stealth heaters, and it's nice that they turn themselves off when the water level drops. Mine have been stable for about six months.

Ebo Jager are still pretty good despite the change of ownership.

I have a couple of ViaAqua titanium ones, one of which started cooking my fish one day.

If you have a canister filter, I highly recommend the Hydor external inline heaters. I have a 300W on my 55 gallon, and it keeps my tank at exactly 80 degrees. They're a bit pricey (around $45.00 online), but I found mine on sale at a dinky LFS for $25.

The best part is that the heater is on the outside of the tank, so no ugly heater junking up the view!

I have four Jager's, not been impressed with them at all.

The old Visa-Therm I hate, however I have two of the new stealth's and so far really like them.

The cheapo whisper heaters at wall mart are just that, cheap.

I have a Second Nature heater going stong for about 8 years now. To bad they stoped making these, and making the new ones like these.

I have via aqua in almost all my tanks and love them! I like the fact that they are either stainless steel or titanium (I have both) so they don't break, and the temperature control is separate and on the outside of the tank, so I don't have to stick my hands in the water to adjust it. Mine have not given me any problems with temp. fluctuations, and they are reasonably priced. I would buy them again. ;)

I use jagers in all my tanks. Fantastic heaters.
I dont like viaqua (aka aquaone), I had one blow up in my fry tank once, it killed everything in it, gave me a hell of a shock and left me in darkness.
