When I gave my fish a snack of bloodworms at lunchtime, I noticed it felt a little warm. I checked the termometer = 86 F. I like it about 80-82, so I turned it down a little. Came home from work, was at 88F. I unplugged it and changed a little water out to bring the temp down.

But now I'm afraid of this heater. I had a friend have a heater go haywire and cook all his fish. This is a 25g tank. I have a brand new 200w Rena Top Light still in the box (for my new tank I'm getting). I also have a 50w cheapo in my 10g QT. Can I put the 200w in the 25g? Or is that going to be way too much power? Should I put the 50w in instead? I think they'll be ok overnight without heat, but I need to do something here.

It shouldn't be too much power, just make sure it's not set too high. Depending on how warm your house is, the 50w might work, but you might as well break out the 200W now, you can switch it back out once you get somewhere and get a new heater for the 25g.

Well, my former heater definately lost its mind. For 'I wonder' purposes, I put it in an empty 10g with cold (72F) water, and set the heater for 82 F. When I went back to check it, the water temp was up to 97F. Even though the heater was oversized for the 10g tank, it should have kicked off well before 97.

For now, my Rena Cal top-light 200w is in the 25g tank, set at 81, current temp was 84.1 in the tank. The heater that failed was a pro-aquatics 100w, I got it with the tank. I'll be getting a new Rena Cal 75-100w heater for the 25g when I get to the store.

Thanks for the quick replies last night.
