This is my first post here so hi to all, I have been into freshwater for a long time mainly 55g cichlids or oscars. Ihad a 5 g nano a long time ago and i just had to get rid of it for moving. anyway i am currently building a 12 gallon eclipse up and had a few ideas and questions, need a few opinions .....
as for filtration i am currently running stock internal bio wheel, however being a nano and all the problems of parameters being so sensitive, i have modified a plate to seal up aroung hoses and remove the old sit on top filter and run a fluval 104 filter on it with water poslishing pads and whatever bio and chemical add ins as needed. as for live rock i pland to in tank cure and kick start cycle the aquarium for at least a 2 week period with just the LR. as for substrate i am using a 30lb?? bag of aragonite realy fine sand and 9 lbs of white dead fiji base, or so i was told, and a few scraps of free rubble fiji LR. I kinda was plannin to get the fosters nano aquarium LR box for 70$ as for the lighting its a 13 watt 10000k/actenic 420 twin tube after market bulb, i have aprox 1.5 watt/gal. if i have the LR i only can get 9 gallons in this tank.....i know this because i buy the ro drinking water at the grocery store and i have 12 gallons of it and only 9 get in the tank.... oh well, extra*thumbsup2 , i though though in the future if this isnt sufficient lighting for the corrals i like then use a convertion kit to get the 32 watt pc lights, plus i want to build the rock in a cove type fasion and slope up so i can place some of the corals up higher to the light as needed. any advice of tips tricks or ideas for me would be greatly appreciated. what kind of corals can i keep in this kind of light? aquatic plants? like grass or somthing really short to give ground cover and fill gaps?

as in no pwer filter just LR, would the other filter hurt anything? I am a filter addict, when i had osrs, 4 404 fluvals on each 55g. i never had a singel disease of ich or water parameter probs, i had tank go thorugh cycles and never have over .5 ppm amonia, and never a fish die from anything but old age or sell them off

wow, (4) 404's that's a lot. I have a ten gallon I have a small hob filter on the back for water movement only. A lot of people advise against the bio wheels. Just keep up with frequent water changes and fw topping off and you'll be good.

ps. as for water top off, i love the eclipse, the top is vey nice fitting and can allow for 5-6 days of operation without any visible water line movement, i allways keep it dead on the black rim so i have a constant marker to refer from

I'm trying to find the post that talks about the bio wheel being a negative. No luck as of yet, I just remember someone (one of the big timers on here)saying no to the wheels.
In the nano sticky it states that filters become nitrate factories.
I wish my water line didn't go down as fast as it does.

bio-load of the tank is the main reason of nitrates in a system. nitrates are the last stage of the nitrogen cycle which starts with ammonia => nitrites=>nitrates. Water changes can remove the nitrates in a tank.
Neither cause the nitrates. But they have the ability to trap them.
This is all from reading, I'm not the brightest bulb so if I am wrong someone please jump in .

From what I've picked up different corals require different amounts of watts per gallon. The depth of your tank and the position of the coral in the tank are very important in light choice. I have 8 w/g and I am happy. Several of the guys here that have a 10g have the 96 watt coralife.
That was probably maiden's hair, it looks just like grass. http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_Display.cfm?pCatId=659
