Help ammonia spike !!!!!!!!!!

i have had a massive ammonia spike in my tank and we went to lfs they told us to do a 50% change straight away and then do a 10% change every other day for 2 weeks it is now the end of week 2 and the ammonia is still very high. what could be causing this and what else could i be doing to help.

Have you tested your tap water? Does it show a reading for ammonia? Could be the chloramine that's showing up as an ammonia reading . . . .
If not, then I'd say it's because the tank is overstocked and/or being overfed, and you need to do more water changes . . . . .

If you are not doing weekly water changes of about 25% this is most likely the cause of your tank crash. LauraF is dead on with keeping up with the water changes and maybe a little lighter feeding. Make sure you dont add the loach you want.

Thanks for the tip on the tap water i tested my tap water and it was fine so it defiantly is something in the tank that is causing it

Did you dechlorinate the tap water before testing it?

What brand of dechlor do you use?
