HI, I got 4 new angels in my 55g tank on saturday and 3 out of 4 have been very active and eating normally. I had the water tested b4 i bought the angels and everything was fine. Today 8/31/04 i noticed that one of my angels tails is starting to disappear or rot and i saw a little white string on the tail towards the body. Is this a disease causing this or another fish. I have 3 bala sharks, 3 tetras, and 3 tiger barbs, with 2 plecos in this tank. And another angel hasnt been eating is this angel getting used to the water still or is it sick. And one last question is how do u tell if the angels are male or female. thanx for all of ur help.

I can't help with everything, but...it sounds like your one angel either has fin rot

or it's being nipped at by another fish. Tiger barbs are notorious for being bad fish to keep with angels. They just can't resist biting at the slow moving large finned targets.

Also when you say new 55 gal, how new do you mean? Had you cycled your tank before you added the fish? Do you know what cycling is? If not, don't feel bad, most people have no idea what it takes to keep happy healthy fish (I know I didn't) but you did the right thing by coming here!

If the tank wasn't cycled this will effect your water quality which leads to disease and unhappy fishes. Please give us more info

I agree it's probably either fin rot, or fin nipping. Watch the other fish for fin rot, and if you see anything developing, treat with a medicine like melafix.

Fish that would be nipping would be either your tetras, depending on what type of tetras they are, or the tiger barbs. Angel fish really aren't a good choice with these type of fish that tend to nip. Escpecially because of the Angel long/large fins. Angel Fish are an easy target.

If some of the other fish in the tank are nipping the only thing you can really do is take the Angel Fish out, get rid of the Bala Sharks and put in some more of the fish that are nipping in order to try to bring down the aggression, or get rid of the fish that are nipping.
