Help, Do any of you know where I can buy good natural gravel for my fish tank??? I am looking all over and haven't found anything yet...

Also can I put sand instead of gravel in a fresh water tank??? Any help would be greatly appreciated because I am getting my tank this week-end....

I am having a heck of a time with bigalsonline, the site continuously crashes and I can't see what they offer... I have asked for the catalogue to be sent, but it takes over 2 weeks to get it! Do you think I will have a problem with the filtration system?

Thanks,

Marie

No I dont not at all keep the pickup a little higher sometimes my fish kick alittle up but its great looking and real easy to take care of take your time and rinse it well I did it in a 5 gal bucket but I wish I would have did it different like a screen or something like that white sand was only 2.50 at home depot for 50 lbs and I got the blue sand at my lfs.

I used playsand in my 80 gallon and it turned out fine. I picked up a 40lb bag for $3.44 at my local Canadian Tire (Home Depot, Lowes etc) You can usually find it in any garden centre.

Make sure that if you do use sand, that it's not too fine. If it is, you'll have problems with aeration and plant growth. Not to mention the crap that will get in it and not come out.

Just rinse your sand really well in a bucket, and voilà..

I like the pool filter sand, my LFS sells it, but it's also available at pool and spa places. It's very large sand, or very small gravel depending on how you look at it :)

The kind I get is multi-colored and looks really nice. Costs $7 for a 50 pound bag, can't go wrong there!

Cool this is really great to know, thanks.. I just think the aquarium looks so much nicer.. Also I don't want my corys to injure their "whiskers".. Silly aren't I, and I don't even have the fish yet or the tank.. I feel like an expectant mother to be!!

Lancelot, my Betta is doing really well in his 2 gallon and eats like a HORSE!!!!!

Too funny!! Don't you think it would then be over crowded?? I am getting 10 fish as it is? Still debating whether to put Lancelot in there too when I get the others.. Sparkling gouramis have longish fins so I am not sure whether that will be a good idea...

How big do the sparkling gouramis get? I think I read the dwarf gouramis get 2-3 inches?

Panda cories only grow to just over 1" and most other cories are small also (2" or so), not sure if the gouramis would be aggressive towards them or possibly eat them? I've never had gouramis.

IME cories are good bottom scavengers eating up all the extra food that falls there and have a low bioload themselves. I think what they clean up would offset what little mess they make rather well, so a few extras shouldn't add to your bioload enough to hurt. Besides, they are just adorable :D

My opinion anyway, maybe someone else can post thier opinion?
