Ok, let me tell you what happened and you guys can give me advise. So I am a little annoyed at my fish, basically the tank has been set up a year and none of my fish are breeding! (i'm a girl, i have been married for quite some time now, my husband and I are compensating on animals in the house, someone can have some babies can't they!!!) Anyways, being frustated over this last year i have realized that most of my fish are males (duh, first problem) so i mixed up the ratio a bit, gave away alot of fish and bought alot of females. (got them to check).

After that I went and bought a fish for my husband for valentines day only for her to die that night. (2nd problem) I realized that my water was turning acidic due to a type of wood that i had, so i went and changed it and had the lfs give me some sort of credit, with that i followed with weekly water changes of 5 gallons to stabilize my water.

and now you bring me to today with my dilema. I went to the LFS and found a rusty cichlid. I wanted her for my tank as she was fully grown... AND PREGNANT! The problem with her is that she has fin rot. I worked out a deal with the LFS that if she dies do to the fact that she has fin rot, he will still owe me a fish (valentines day) if she lives then kudos to me.

So basically, i have her quarentened in a seperate tank, i am medicating her with Maracyn-Two and am hoping that she gets better, my problem, well my fish is pregnant and like always i rushed in and have no idea what to do or what i need.

is this posted on the right forum?

Not particularly sure how the meds and/or ailment will effect fry.

At this point can you tell if rusty has eggs in her mouth or fry?

What are the type of fish you have that apparently aren't procreating?

Hmm, i never thought about if it would affect the fry or not. The LFS said I should use it for 5 days.

When she lets me look into her mouth all i basically see is black stuff, i am assuming that each species has a different color egg as i have seen them as white before, does anyone know?

and I have a couple of Johanni's, a red top zebra, dolphin, mosobo. Mostly Zebra's in the tank with a couple ofunknowns. Hybrids most likely.

I am trying to do some research on Rusty Cichlids and breeding them, does anyknow know if i need to remove her from the tank once the fry is born? or is there anything else that i need to know?

Mbuna eggs are pale peach-orange in color. The darker colors you may be seeing are probably developing fry, then.

Once the fry are born, the mother can be removed. Or leave her in there if there is a lot of cover in the fry to hide among and if she still requires to be quarantined.

Babies!!! When i got home from work I went to check up on "mom" in the tank to see how the fin rot was coming along and under one of the rocks was a fry. I didn't think it would happen this quickly but it did. I came back a few hours later and saw another. I can see 1 more inside her mouth but wouldn't be surprised if there were 2. Once I saw the fry i got some flake food and broke it up and fed them. (man they eat alot!) "mom" was eating too. So my next question is what are the probabilities of the fry having fin rot and can this kill them as they are so weak?

i woudn't know about the babies having fin rot. but i have always left the mommy and the fry in the main tank and most of my fry have survived. they learn to hide very well and i could always see them at feeding time poking there heads out from under the gravel and rocks to catch sinking food. so if the fish arent to big in the main tank i would just put them in there (when the lights are off). and keep the mommy in the qt tank untill she is better. i am suggesting this bc i don't know how the meds will effect the fry (them being to little and fragile). but if the meds are okay i would just leave them and give them some cover in the qt.

so i guess the question would be if the fry can handle the meds.
