I just lost my male Pearl Gourami last night. This morning I went on the that disease website that gets posted on here alot I cant find out what went wrong. There were no outward signs of anything wrong with him. He showed no difference in behavior and he ate the night before. When I got home last night I found him spiraling. When he would stop he would bob to the surface with his head out of water. When he'd try and swim he would spiral again. I lost my female Pearl Gourami to the samething a few months ago (when they were in the 55G before the Discus came home). And none of the other fish got sick after that and this time none of them look sick either. What happened??

O and this tank has been up for a while and is fully cycled and my parameters are fine. (In case anyone was going to ask :p)

guppy_newbe,

Sorry about the passing of your gourami.

You're talking about the 30 gal. tank listed in your sig., right? If so, is the 1 Pearl gourami that's still listed there in the tank right now (i.e. you still have at least one living gourami left in that same tank)?

If so, then my best guess would be a swim bladder problem that's causing the erratic swimming---perhaps brought on by the gouramies fighting, and causing internal damage. I don't know about the pearls, but I've had opalines and golds that have really gone at it, and in the end I lost a few to this (probably internal bruising/swim-bladder damage along with stress, in general, that led to their demise).

Did you see them fighting (circling one another with mouth to body/tail area...not the same as mating!)?

You said he just started this erratic swimming behavior last night, right? That's awfully quick to "do him in," so to speak, but perhaps he sustained a severe internal (e.g. swim-bladder) injury and the stress of everything was too much for him to handle.
That's my best guess.

Hope this helps a bit.

my first guess was swim bladder also based on the spiral swimming.

Yes its the one thats in my sig. I havent taken it off yet. So no there isnt another one. Thanks for the geuss Big Vine.
You're welcome...sorry I couldn't really help. If there were no other gouramies in there (and presumably no fighting), then I'm stumped.

Maybe someone else will have a better idea of what led to his mysterious death.

I had a gourami long time ago who got the desease. It can be "whirling desease" as Lotus suggested back then:
http://freshaquarium.about.com/cs/disease/p/whirling.htm

I had (my gourami):

Symptoms:
Loss of equilibrium +
Swims in a whirling motion +
Bodily deformations -
Nodules and boils appear on body -
Dark coloration on posterier third of fish +

I remember that he whirled and whirled... It was turquouse gourami

Also, he could hit a glass if somebody scared him and damaged his brains somehow... Or he had a brain tumor

It must be the week for losing gourami, I lost 2 this week to the same thing. All other fish in the aquarium are fine and there were no visual signs of a problem until the spiraling. I let them both go for 2 days but eventually had to put them down.
