scratch that magnum 350. i like marineland stuff but magnums suck as as far as canisters go.they just don't hold enough media or offer as many options as other canisters.and if you were intersested in the idea of using it to vacume the gravel that don't seem to work either.go ahaed and get it if you just want it to run bio-wheel or move water.one question why laterite not flourite.the cost of laterite is high compared to flourite.also if your going to orde online you might as well order everything from bigals and get a good price on evrey thing(except maybe the substrates)

if i were you i would scrap the magnum and get an eheim. i just bought an eheim ecco 2235 and i love it. it is by far the best filter i have ever owned. granted i have never had an eheim classic but for the money they cannot be beat. my second choice would be the new fluvals. they have been greatly improved, but there still not an eheim. i managed to pick my ecco up for about $120 at my lfs which i thought was a great deal. look around you should find one for the same price elsewhere

update. i just looked on big als website (which i might add i would not have known about had i not been on this website) and they have the 2235 for around $90.
so i guess my "great deal" wasn't all that great but what do you do. to late now. "DOH"

Make your own background - just paint a big piece of paper or polystyrene or whatever.

What do you need the biospira for - you've already got a bunch of tanks you can seed a filter with?

since he is planning on doing planted emperors would not be good, they produce way too much surface movement and the co2 would dissipate, with an eheim you do not need as much power because it filters the water much better, this is best for plants, also ive never heard of an eheim breaking and the LFS carry/order parts for them here and others probably would also,if the eheim price is too much get a fluval, one of the 04 series

tsadik a UV sterilizer on a freshwater tank? I've never heard of that one before.

Abercrombie6202- your gonna need a hell of a lot more gravel than 1.25 pounds of laterite and 25 pounds of plain stuff.

For my 30 gallon I'm using 30 pounds of flourite.
You should use about 60 pounds or thereabouts.

I'd go with flourite instead, its easier to work with. If thats to expensive just get some Profile Turface its the same stuff and you get a 50lb sack of it for 5$ (granted its hard to find, and you will probably have to call Profile and see where their nearest distributor is)

Second, skip the background stuff thats crap, just paint the back of your tank, it'll look about 300 times cooler, use black or blue, (I prefer black)

Get one (stronger) heater, when you have all these things poking in your tank its gonna look gay and your gonna need way to many surge protectors

Drop all that conditioning crap, its just junk (unless you live in some toxic waste dump where your water glows)

Finally buy everything on ebay, and buy used, those prices are REDICULOUS

also ditto what the one guy said, that Magnum doesn't hold enough media and doesn't move enough water, and the biowheel will kick all the co2 outta your tank if you plan on adding plants.....

whew! that was an effort!!!!
