hello, all
in my 20 gal tall tank it came with a POS tetra whisper EX20 power filter and its been pretty much nothing but problems for the last 9 months. well i think its at the point where its basicly just circulating water, and its barely doing that.
so i need some fast advice on a new 20-30 gal power filter
needs to be some what affordable with money being tight and the time of year
thanks Eric

Marineland Penguin Bio-Wheel
Aqueon Power Filter

Both of these are Hang-On-Back type filters and will probably get some of the issues your Tetra does. They're all inexpensive and do a fairly decent job. I don't have an EX, but a Whisper, so that might be a difference. Are you cleaning the gunk out of the filter tubes?

Upgrading to a canister filter will run you between 100-350.

Out of the cheaper filters (if you don't want to spring for an AquaClear, which is what I'd recommend if money wasn't an issue), I'd say go with the Aqueon. I have one on one of my smaller (9gal) tanks and it is wonderful. Not as good as the AquaClears, but better than the Tetras and the AquaTechs for sure. I'm not a fan of the Marineland Penguin series anymore, mainly because they're glorified AquaTechs and AquaTechs are crap.

bassbonediva, what's a blue bonded filter pad? I have an aquaclear for my tank, but I've just left the carbon in there, along with a sponge and two bags of the bio stuff.
