I put him in the new 2.5 tank (after acclimation, testing equipment...) and he really seems to hate the filter. It's a little air pump made for small tanks. Should I forget the filter, or will he get used to it?

if there's any way to turn down the air or just turn it off for awhile and on for awhile while he gets used to it...that might be best. You definitely want to filter the water, but the biggest thing is that most bettas live in unfiltered cups for a long time and dont have very strong swimming skills so just give him some time :) He might just be excited not to be cooped up anymore!

I agree, he spent all his time in a tiny cup so he might just be excited to finally just be a normal tropical fish! If the filter is at it's lowest and he does not relax within time, maybe upgrade to a Eclipse 3 gallon. My Betta has a Eclipse 6 and he loves it (-:
