My female betta was a slightly swollen stomach. When it was pretty swollen, I assumed it was dropsy and put in meds. She didn't pinecone, but dind't get better. I also didn't feed her yesterday. Except for a small pea, in case of consitpation. Today the swelling seems to have gone down a bit. Oh, and no it isn't eggs, her oviposter is normal. What should I do? Should I give her another pea today? I'm still not feeding her. I don't know if she's pooped or not cuz I gave her the pea right b4 I went to sleep. And the gravel doesnt help. She's acting basically normal today. Active and everything. Except when I turned the lights on in the tank this morning, she had fear stripes, which went away after a moment. What the heck is going on?

A natural medication and water conditioner for bettas are "almond leaves". You might be able to find them at a place that specializes in bettas. The second best is dried banana skin. Each will color the water slightly, but either will keep bettas in top condition. This was recommended by the SE Asian betta breeder here in the Twin Cities. What size is your tank?

You could also try to soak your food in some freshly crushed garlic and tank water. The active ingredient allicin in garlic is a known parisite repellent.

I used this method to rid my reef tank fish of ich. I supplemented with the fresh garlic foods everyday for a month or so. My fish look very healthy as a result.

Hmm, well she looks better. It isn't parasites, cuz she isn't darting or glancing or anything. I fed her today and she ate. She even jumped the divider of the tank to try and get to my male's food the other day. She's in a five gallon divided tank. How much banana skin would I use? How do I dry it... do I just leave it out? Cuz my "specialty" store is Petco... lol there aren't any just fish stores in the area.

It won't take much . . . about an 1"-2" square should be enough. Put it in your filter so it is easier to take out. I dry it out in a "warm" oven for awhile to dehydrate it. Leaving it out, it tends to "rot" . . . and attracts fruit flies. They just seem to "materialize" if you leave it out, speaking from a bad experience.

Also left me with the mystery of how fruit flies got into a 11th floor condo.

hmmm ok. She's now acting very odd. She presses herself on the bottom of the tank under a leaf... is she just resting, or is she lethargic? Sis thinks she has popeye... but I think her eyes look normal. I'm putting meds in the tank in case of popeye or dropsy. Will keep u updated.

Now she is tilted upwards a lot.... nose up. She seemed to have trouble keeping balanced... She's truned a funky color. Normally her body is a dark brown, but it has paled and is kinda irridescent and greenish. Her caudral fins are also wiggling a lot like there's a current, but there is none... HELP! I don't know what's going on....
