I have a zebra danio that is swimming pretty erattically. I looked at it more closely, and it appears to have a white spec (similar to the description I've read for ich) on it's right pectoral fin. What's interesting is that the fish is swimming completely with it's tail - more or less swmming at an upward angle. It's pectoral fins are not moving at all. They don't look damaged, except for the white spec I mentioned above. Would ich cause the fish to completely stop using it's fins like that?

Also, I have a red swordtail that I got yesterday and it has what I can best describe as a small cotton looking thing coming out from between some scales on it's back - it's quite small. It looks like it could be picked off, so I'm not sure if it's a disease or not.

Any suggestions?

Well on the Danio I suggest Quaratine him/her. I dont know but the reason for the swimming like that could be a possible swim bladder(dont ven think thats the right name).

On the Swordtail, as well Q him/her and talk to your LFS. Maybe they could help you with trying to figure out whats wrong.

On the Danio, if he/she is still like that and is not eating or anything. The best thing to do would be to euthanize him/her. But that will be only a last resort, some times if a fish cant swim properly then they will have problems eating and will be picked on to death. Good luck and I hope the get better.

No, ich wouldn't cause the fish to have problems moving its fins. I would suspect they both have a bacterial disease. Check all the fish to see if there are any other spots on them. On the danio, check whether the spot is in any way fuzzy.

The sticky at the top of the Disease Forum has a bunch of links to help you diagnose the diseases. :)

I went through them. I was leaning toward baterial infection as well. I just took it back to lfs and they recognized the danio as sick and said they'd rehab him. They gave me a new one and told me to add some salt, as they think the swordtail's problem is, in fact ich. I'll keep and eye on them, though.

bacterial infection

So, I just lost my male swordtail. Early this afternoon I noticed his mouth area was looking bleach white. It was really apparent as I was trying to acclimate a new red swordtail, and the difference was pretty stark. I took a look at the existing female, and one side of her face was pretty much bleach white.

I took a look at the disease classification site, and it looks very much like the Columnaris. I went to lfs and got some anti-bacterial and just started the treatment. I removed the carbon filter catridges from my filter.

Can anyone recommend anything to keep me from losing any more fish?
