I have a whisper filter system for a 10 gallon tank. Well it seems the water flow is starting to slow down on full throttle, also the level seem to be almost at the level of the trickle knob. I tried to taking the cartridge out and washing it and that did help a lil bit but not much. Do i get another cartridge or replace the stuff inside the cartridge? I also read on here that i could cut a piece of sponge to fit the filter slot. HELP

Replace the entire filter, in my experiences, Whispers are pieces of crap.

If you want a good filter for a ten gallon tank, I'd go with a Marineland Penguine 120.

If you want a half-decent filter for a ten gallon tank, go with an Aqua-Clear 200.

Other than that, you'll have to ask around more. But the above two brands I've never had any problems with.

I have a whisper 40. I don't use the carbon. You can empty out the carbon, then give the filter a good rinse in spent tank water, and that should help. Personally, I use some filter floss, a square of poly filter pad, and a square of carbon pad, both cut to fit. I seem to get better results and they last longer without clogging up. The floss catches quite a bit of gunk, and I usually replace that weekly. The carbon pad I only use occasionally. The poly pad I just rinse and reuse. When it gets too yucky, then I replace it. I notice that the water flows much better with this setup than with the bags.

i also have had bad luck with whispers, but wouldnt call them THAT bad.

aquaclears are great filters, but would still shudder to call them "well-built". they are made with crappy plastic, have sponges that vary in size from box to box, and have the motor mounted separately- which can cause more unwanted problems. the lids can rattle like crazy on some of them too.

i would go with an ac or a penguin-- but would avoid tetratecs and whispers....only my opinion, nothing more.
