I can't get my fluval open to rinse out the filter media. I tossed the directions (who knew I'd need them?!) Any help on getting this stupid thing open is appreciated.

On the sides there are flip up handles these also act as clamps for the lid. You have to flip these up to remove the top.

Also make sure you have closed the valve and disconnected the hoses. The whole hose unit should pull out once the valve is closed. If you forget this part your looking at one heck of a mess.

As stated, once you remove the clamps the top can be removed. However, with mine I notice at times it's quite difficult to pry up. Be careful not to knock it over in the process and make a mess!

I have issues getting the thing open every time I want to clean it. Just make sure the clamps are undone and sometimes it helps to stick a nail file or something into the edge to get it open a little bit. Don't stick it in too far because the reason its 'stuck' is because the little rubber deal inside is making it an air-tight seal and there's no way to automatically get the thing to pop open...but if you hurt the little rubberband thingy I dont know if it will seal correctly again. I know last time I put it together I knocked that band out of place in one spot and the thing leaked when I put it back together so I had to take it apart again and set it right before everything was working smoothly again.

Hey good to see you back ;)

I think when its pliable it makes it even harder to get open! lol I know mine is fine...but its major 'break a nail, spill water all over the place' city when I go to open the darn thing.

Wow, I think the only time I've had a problem with getting either of mine open was when I didn't remove the hoses first. I think you get a vacuum that is difficult to break unless you pop that "aqua-stop" thing off the top first...

Either you folks have something different than I do or I've got the 2 easiest opening Fluval 204's ever made.

1. I lift the lever on the aquastop to shut off the water flow.
2. I lift the lever on the aquastop that disconnects the hoses.
(At this point I move the filter out of the cramped space in the cabinet so I can work on it more easily)(don't tilt it now!)
3. I unlatch the motor clamps and lift the motor assembly rignt off.

No prying, pulling, grunting or hands flying around...

perhaps its a difference between the 204 and 304? I have a 304 and I always take the hoses off first...not sure why you'd try to open it with the hoses still attached? Esp when they make it so easy to just push the levers and take them off...

I suppose it could be, I've only had the two... The basic design is the same, just bigger.

Oh well, I hope we've answered sannd's question...:D

Edit:The reason I tried to take it off with the hoses still on was because the handle that unlocks the hoses broke ( I forced it) :( I did shut the water valve but had a b!tc& of a time getting the motor off...

Thats odd, on my 404 I've never had any issue with getting the motor off. When I lift the handles I can pop them out once to 'let go' of the bottom part, and when I left them all the way up they push down on the bottom and break the seal for me.
