Hello everyone, I'm a newbie here, and i have a really sick fishy.

He is a Goldfish my daughter brought home from summer camp about 5 years ago. "Junior," as my daughter named him, has of course been taken care of for the last 5 years by mommy. Anyway, Junior has seemed sick for a long time now. About a year ago, I noticed he had lost all of his scales. Then I noticed he had a cloudy patch almost covering one of his eyes completely, and the other was getting to be the same. They both are "popeyed."
Now, he searches for food so much that the front of his mouth is now all red. He also got red streaks in his fins.

I have tried EVERYTHING to help him. I have another goldfish in there with him, and that one is not sick at all. (Although his scales seem to have fallen off as well, but that's all). I have tried Myacin, Myacin 2, Maroxyl, any and all fungus infection medication, and now finally Life Force, which says it covers all diseases.

This last one I tired, Lifeforce, seemed to work well, at first. He seemed happy and would swim sideways under his filter like he used to when he was feeling well. The cotton on his eyes NEVER went away, however.

Then, about a week later, I noticed he was lethargic again, and had the red streaks again.

I have read that I need to treat the fish two times, since the infections may return. I am now treating the tank again. ( I have also done this in the past as well).

I have even purchased expensive treatment for bacterial and fungal infections in fish online. Nothing seems to help him, and if they do, it 's never for long.

I admit, I do not test the water. I do , however, clean it (empty it out completely and put new water in, along with the "good" bacteria needed for a healthy tank,) about once a week.

He also has always pooped ALOT. The other one doesn't poop quite as much as he does, although he's a BIG goldfish, and the other one seems to be staying on the smaller side, especailly compared to Junior.

What can I do for him, if anything? I am so fustrated and sad seeing him sufferring, and I 've tried everything imaginable I think to help him. He's such a personality fish, too, alot of people don't realize it, but fish are individuals too, along with most of God's creatures. I simply have no more options, and am considering putting him out of his misery, he looks so bad.

If anyone has any suggestions, please help! I unfortunately don't have the time or energy other than all the treatments I've already done to help him. (I can't do one treatment, then half a week at half dose of this and that...ect, ect.) Is'nt there a simpler way ??!! I also have 4 white ringneck doves and 7 cats. And of course a nine year old daughter. I have NO time. (I'm a single full time working mom).

But I love my Junior, and want to help him. He's such a silly fish, when he's not miserably ill.

Help!!!!

Ps...if there is no easy help for Junior, what is a painless, fast, humane way to put him down??

Out of answers,

Amy *SICK*

Well Amy, I cant really give you much advise, other than to search the forums, or take him in to your local fishy store and see what they think.

I'm sorry to hear about what has happend to your fish. I know how attached I am to mine.

You will probably get some good responses on here...

Best of luck,

Red streaks in the fins is not a good sign and can mean lack of oxygen in the water, ammonia poisoning, and others. My guess is that your fish are in a tank/bowl that is WAY too small for them and possibly unfiltered. Goldfish are very messy fish, as you have noticed, and really need at least 20 gallons of water for the first goldfish and another 10 gallons for each subsequent fish. So for those two goldfish, you should be keeping them in a highly filtered 30 gallon fish tank.

I suspect your fish is suffering from lingering effects of bad water quality combined with a home it has outgrown. If your other goldfish has not grown, it is likely both fish's growth has been stunted by their small home.

My immediate suggestion, take a sample to the pet store and get a reading on your water. WRITE DOWN the numbers they give you and post them back here, don't let them just tell you it's "fine" or let them sell you something. While you're at the pet store, buy a 29 gallon fish tank (stand if you need it) and appropriate Hanging filter. If you haven't used it, you will also need water conditioner.
