Hey dont beat me up too bad, I'm new to all of this!! Just got my tank set up yesterday, a buddy of mine got me into this as a new hobby and I think I might just enjoy it. I'm just trying to decide what I can actually put into a 10 gallon to start out. Any Ideas out there?

You can put many many different kinds of fish into your tank, but the question is will they live?

You may or may not know about the nitrogen cycle that takes place in your tank to keep things in balance and your fish alive. To learn about this which will save you a lot of trouble read this thread

http://www.myfishtank.net/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=4084

It will explain what the nitrogen cycle is and show you how to do a fishless cycle. Once this cycle is finished you can find any suitable sized fish for your 10 gallon and keep them alive for a long time. So be sure to read up and research before you go out and buy fish. Make sure you check out the profiles here at MFT to make sure you buy smaller fish not fish that get up to 12" +.

So anything else in particular you dont understand or would like to know?

Welcome! How about some specs on your setup? Lights, filter and whatnot to gauge what to put in that tank. Im sure some people will chime in soon. What kind of tank setup are you wanting to do? (as in planted, type or style of fish etc??)

And I'll be the first to say it.... have you read up about cycling??
grrrr... while I was typing dpethC responded... so Im the second

welcome to the tank! dont worry about getting beaten up...its hard to punch through a screen...:pj/k

after reading about the nitrogen cycle, it would be what your personal preference is and what fish you like, and of course the stocking capabilites of your ten gallon.

Do you have any idea what kind of fish you would like? I would suggest going to look at fish at your local fish store (LFS) and see what you like. Then, come home and research the fish to see if they would work. I wouldn't recommend anything that gets over 3 inches for that size tank, so a number of fish that get to 1 or 2 inches would be happier. Just a word of warning: some LFS will give bad advice about fish, especially about what size they will grow to or what tankmates they will go with. It really is worth doing your own research.

As others said, read up on cycling. It makes your tank safe for fish, so you shouldn't have any die when you bring them home :)
