Will Melafix do anything for HITH? I do believe one of my Oscars has it. The other one looks great. They are in a 55g, I do about a 30% wc every 10 days or so, and my water parameters are as follows:

Temp: 76F
Ammonia: 0
NitrIte: 0
NitrAte: 10
pH: 8.4

These guys are also eating the Hikari Cichlid Gold large pellets twice a day, with feeders once every week or two...(this is usually when I do my water changes, after they get done with their feeders).

Anyway, is there anything else I can do for my buddy? I've heard contradicting information about the Melafix, on this board AND at work...any other meds that would be more beneficial to him? I would take a pic for you, but my cam is dead, have to give it a while to charge.

EDIT: This is unrelated, but can anyone tell me how to make my "Death by Dying" link active?? It won't work!

there are many people out there, including breeders, who beleive that HIH may be caused by feeders. goldfish serve no nutritional value to fish and carry diseases like rabid piegons in the city. same with guppy feeders from the store.
i really advise anyone wanting to even feed feeders to breed thier own...at least then they know where their coming from. and guppies are slightly more nutrional.

and with HIH the only cure for it really is a lot of water changes, as some others think bad water quality may have something to do with it.

and try this...i havnt written html forever. just take all the spaces out of it < a href="(yourfilenamehere.)htm">< img src="(picfilenamehere).gif"> < /a>

Well thanks, will sure try that...now, as for the water changes, every two days, every three or four? He hasn't acted any different, but then again, I must have caught this at a very early stage. He could have hit the hood, too, but I don't think that's what's going on here.

I haven't had experience with HITH, but you could try Melafix. It is supposed to heal open wounds. It did help my angel with his injuried mouth. But try the water changes too. Sorry I can't help much, good luck.

Well there is a diesease out there called hexamita that has been linked with HITH, and this diesease affects cichlids (like oscars) but I don't even know if it causes, or expolits HITH. Most people I know consider HITH largely enviromental, and reversible.
Lots water changes, massive variation in diet. No more feeders, just junk, vary the types of pellet you feed, add some frozen foods. How old is the pellet food - the stuff starts to deteriorate nutritionally very quickly when exposed to moist air, so if the tub is more than a few months old then get a new one. And lots of big water changes - thee fish are messy, and while I don't know your nitrates count, there will still be a lot of dissolved organics like hormones that have been excreted, and not entered the nitrogen cycle, and these need to go.
