hole in the head?

my buddie has an oscar that looks like a big chunk is missing from the center of his head. he has been useing melafix, but he says it has barely eaten in a month. anyone know what could be wrong?

If it's HTH he needs stronger meds than Melafix..That won't even touch it.

OK to explain it a little better it is a common illness normally occurring in SA/CA cichlids who have been overly inbred thus weakening their immune system. I can't remember if it's bacterial, gram negative or gram positive. It causes actual holes in the fish's flesh normally in the region of the head, hence the name. If not treated it is fatal.

There are plenty of medications out there that will treat it and most can commonly be found in any LFS. A google search should pull up plenty of them.
