I have Amazon Swords. A lot of my friends in the hobby have Amazon Swords. Their swords are growing nicely, very wide tall leaves but mine on the other hand are not doing so well. My swords constantly have algae on them and are developing holes in the leaves. Also, the leaves are very pale in color and usually see through.

This has been the problem for some time before my 55G i had a 20G and a 10G side by side with a 48" shop light hanging above them. That had two 40 Watt halogens in it but now i have a hood and the hood fixture only has room for just one 40 Watt. I fill my tank with city water that i condition first of course but I've been told by many hobbyist that the town water is the best for growing plants due to its high mineral content with all the old pipes in the houses but its just not happening. What should i be doing or not doing?
