I went to some of my LFS the other day to get a new female platy and was looking at the guppies as they were quite expensive ($6.95) and to my disgust saw that he was selling a a hugely, undeniable imbreed female guppy. Its hunch on its spine was massive

How can LFS get away with this???

Most guppies are inbred...thats how they breed color strains. BUT most breeders cull out the disfigured, weak ones...and most lfs check out the stock before they get them to sell.

Its horrible to see that in a tank though. One of the lfs that I go to buys local stock and always has several different tanks containing the same species for different prices...either because the fish are younger or lower grade...or older and a higher grade.

SOME guppies are only 1-2 dollars (most of the ones you see at lfs)...but some people pay literally hundreds of dollars for some fancy guppies that are actually shown and used for breeding some of the color strains.

Not to mention, that Tetra Girl is probably not from the States. New Zealand, maybe? Not sure what "NZ" stands for.
