Hi,

Summer is starting with a vengeance down here in the Southern Hemisphere.  The temperature in my tank at midnight last night was 29 degrees celcius (around 84 degrees Fahrenheit). I remember some earlier threads on cooling the water in your tank.

I have two questions:

(1) At what point does the temperature become dangerous for Angels, Corys, Loaches etc. ?
(2) Is it a really bad idea to put ice cubes in your tank?

Regards.

The ideal temp should be around 76-80 for tropical fish although mine has survive temps up to 86.  Higher temps requires higher oxygenation so be forewarned.

Also, ice cube won't hurt for a freshwater tank.  It's just like to a slow water change.  I have tried water in a 2 L pop water frozen and it works.

my tank has gotten up to 87 one time (ac busted) but they did fine a way to cool the wter down is leave the hood open with lots of surface agitation and cut back on the lights if ur lights get hot like mine i had to turn my lights off b/c they made alot of heat and the hood was just plexiglass over my tank and i just positioned it so water can evaportate and that can help cool ur tank down another way i can go is with chillers but i'm sure like some of us they're exspensive and can't afford them but if u wanna go that way thats an option

I know this is not related to freshwater, what is the high for saltwater? Fish and invert tank.

If you have corals and inverts, you shouldn't go past 84-85 degrees, especially corals.  The thing is that if something dies in a saltwater tank, it will stink up the tank and kill everything else within 24 hrs because of the ammonia spike.

Watch the ice cubes yall, if a smaller fish comes in contact with one you will notice small burns on their scales. Try putting the ice cubes in a plastic baggie.  Is there any readily avaliable (cheap) AC units for the fish tank here in the U.S.A?
