Woke up this morning and just found Violet and Jade Both floating at the top of their 5 gallon tank. After all this, my youngest child starts screaming that his new dwarf hamster is dead. I have never lost a new Betta so I am very upset actually have never lost a hamster either as we will have had my daughters hamster 4 years this summer. Tested the water and got a reading of 20ppm on the nitrates which surprised me. I know that is not really that high but it should be zero, correct? I also did a proper acclimation procedure. I have three other Bettas all male so I am not sure what happened except that it had to have been the nitrates.

I hope all those male bettas are in different tanks. Male bettas will fight to the death if kept in the same tank

How often do you test your water? And how long has it been set up? Although it would be great for nitrates to be 0, realistically they never are...unless the tank never cycled

Yes, all the male bettas are in different tanks. I have had Bubba for several years and the other two for several months now. I am very familiar with keeping Betta fish. I just have never had any female Bettas. I test my water weekly. I am positive the tank was 100% cycled. It had neons living in it before the Bettas.

Very sorry. Low Nitrates are normal in a cycled tank. Anything below 40 is good. The lower the better.

Oh that stinks I'm sorry!! Is it possible that something got into their tanks? With kids around you never know...
