How do I clean new equipment?

I just bought a new filter w/ biowheel from a friend that is taking down his tank. It is covered in green slime and little white dots everywhere. What is the proper way to clean this before introducing it to my 29 gal. saltwater. FYI: the filter came out of a 15 gal. saltwater I think

no reason to clean the biowheel, just remove it and save yourself the algae hastle....warm water and a rag are your best bet for cleaning the plastic
