To rid the fumes follow catfishmikes advice and make sure its aquarium safe also. But just to warn you ahead of time, colored gravel is a pain in the ass. I got 2 25pound bags of blue gravel for my 45g tank and i rinsed all the gravel real well. But its been almost 2 years and im still picking up paint chips and particles when i gravel vaccum. Also after a while the gravel doesnt look so good since the paint comes of. They are prolly a mix of whites and blues because youve been scrubbing the paint off the gravel, most of my blue gravel has white sides and spots due to the blue paint comming off. So for future reference refrain from colored gravel because its really not worth the look for the trouble it causes.

Maybe it's a certain brand or something? I once had a 15G hex that was running for about 3 years with blue/purple gravel, and i never lost a paint chip, as far as i know.

Then, in the 46 gallon, I had black/red gravel for about 2 years, and did a gravel vac about once a month, with no paint ever falling off....

Perhaps it's certain colors or certain brands? very interesting.....

The question that this brings about is....what color of gravel is the "unpainted" kind? White or brownish tan?

surely 'white' gravel is a suitable marine substrate and more like sand and the 'tan' gravel is actually pebbles? Forgive my ignorance but thats the only stuff we have here in North London, apparently....

My molly has just given birth yet again (i swear its an immaculate conception!), and those she hasnt eaten i put in the aforementioned tank and all seem to be doing fine after 2 days. I exchanged some of the filter media from my established tank and also added about 20 litres of cycled water from it to the new tank. Fingers crossed i dont kill the buggers!!

PS- anyone want any shortfin pure black mollies from Hampstead, NW3?
