how do you vent a fish...?

I just make sure my hands are good and wet. You can use plain latex or vinyl gloves if you wish -- that's what we use when handling the fish at the hospital. Some people use a little stress coat in the water afterwards or pour some on their hands. The trick is to be as gentle as possible and keep the fish calm while being handled.
Right now, aside from my monties, barbatus and otos, I'm down to goldfish, all of which are accustomed to being handled and many of which are big enough to grab onto, so it's relatively easy to examine them as needed.
