I am going to set up my 55 gal tank this summer, but right now at my local walmart there is a common oscar for sale. He is about 3" long now, and my 30gal is empty since the passing of my dwarf puffer. Would this be an appropriate home for him for 6 months?

oscars grow fast in optimal conditions. it depends on feeding, water quality, etc. you could probably have him in there for 6 months, but no longer. a 55 might not be wide enough for a full grown oscar, but it worked for me.

a 55 gallon is a good home for a single oscar as an adult, but that's about it. :)

the 30 gallon would allow you to grow him out a bit if you would like to keep him in there until you set-up your 55 gallon.

they grow VERY quickly for the first several months, but then taper-off sharply afterwards.

as far as the 55 gallon only being 12 inches wide:

some people say to go for the 75 gallon, some the 55 gallon.

i think that a 55 gallon is ok as long as the oscar is ALONE and water changes are done regularly.

www.oscarfish.com - great oscar site, check it out.

Ive had two oscars in a 55 and had them in there for years....i did what you did, stuck them in a 29 for a while then got a 55. In my opinion that is enough room, it would never hurt to go more but they were perfectly fine in a 55, they bread and everything. And yes, they do grow fast, quicker than most ide say but 6mo should work out perfect for you.
