Betta's aren't really "big tank" type of fish. They enjoy having a "territory" to patrol and a large tank doesn't really provide that since they need to surface for air and food. I've kept one in a 20 gallon with some other community fish, but that's about as big as I'd go with them.

Hold your horses MF, I've seen people do a soronity tank in a 55 gal and it worked pretty good. Just add TONS of hiding spots and the more bettas you have in a soronity, the better.

Yea. I also want to start to breed them.
Breeding bettas is not for the fainthearted, or for anyone lacking in research skills. Before you think anymore about it you need to research the topic thoroughly. You'll need a breeding tank, separate housing for the female, time to observe when to remove her post-breeding, lots and lots and lots of containers for the offspring (and lots and lots of room!), and tons of knowledge to keep the whole thing from becoming a fiasco.

I'm not saying it can't be done, it just needs to be thought seriously through.

I stand by my original assertion, I've personally found that bettas, male or female, don't do well in larger tanks. It's a big jump from living in a cup of water all your life to a larger tank and it tends to stress them out. Same with big currents that can come from filters on larger tanks, they need slow moving water as they aren't strong swimmers.

Probably better. I've heard, although have had no experience, with the fact that multiple females in a tank as big as 50 gal. shouldn't be a problem But I'd take the advice of the more experienced people...
