Any thoughts on the ideal number of Calvus you should keep in a 40 gallon. Only have two at the moment (1.5") but would like more as they are great fish and I am well below my stocking limit.

Sorry for the delay, no the two fish I have are housed with Ocellatus and J.Ornatus. The problem I have is that although juvenile one of the Calvus picks on the other constantly and I was wondering if by adding one or two more it may help. As they grow I will eventually upgrade to a larger tank.

cheers

I have a pair of males, think they are siblings from their identical markings, who seem content to just hang together. Calvus are normally not territorial unless breeding, so it may be that you've already reached maximum stocking. They are best kept in pairs according to Aqualex (also 400 litres minimum, but they often state high numbers!), so I doubt that introducing more would achieve much except perhaps to worsen the aggression.

Do your calvus have caves, UKSouth? I know they normally just like to hang around observing but mine seem to like having a cave to retire to as and when.

Hi UKSouth, just found the following on eBay:-

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=3212&item=2368060410

Right up your street I would have thought, especially as it includes the Eheim canister!?

It sounds to me like your dominant calvus has claimed all the territory and that you might be better off removing the second rather than adding more. Maybe the bigger tank will be your answer.

PS - I'm going to fix a day/time for Purple to visit over the holiday season, I live near Farnham/Alton - do you fancy a day away from the coast for a warm beer and mince pie? If so drop me a mail at d.bugler@macmillan.co.uk
