What sort of cichlids - 1 inch apistos, 2 feet long Cichla or Boulengerochromis? This might seem like a harsh reply, but one mans cichlid is likely different to anothers. David Soares kept between 150 and 175 Apisto Cacatuoids in a colony in a 55, but equally, assuming it's 4 feet long you could keep a single oscar or other large, medium aggressive fish. Or you could keep a number say 4 or 6 , of medium sized cichlids like firemouths , spilurum.
Or you could keep a flock of peacocks , like 2 males 8 females, a flock of tropheus , say 12, or a whole load of mbuna.
There are lots of answers to this questions I'm afraid.

around 16-18 mbuna can be kept in a 50gallon.

I know people on cichlid-forum.com that keep 20 mbuna in a 29gallon. Remember with cichlids its better to over stock to keep agression to a low.

AFRICAN cichlids, does not apply to other cichlids.

even with this advice you will have to experiment for yourself. some fish just dont mix it up well in mbuna tanks IMO *cough- demasoni- hmm....

when you overstock, which i agree does seem to work for many african cichlid species, you also need to compesate for the large bio-load and filter the crap out of your tank and do plenty of water changes.

If your going to keep demasoni its best to keep all demasoni and alot of them. If you plan to keep only 2 demasoni then you will only have 1 demasoni in the next few days.

i have several times tried to keep demasoni even in groups as large as 12 with no luck. the dominant male would still knock one off at least once a week until he was the only one left.

YMMV

Yes, as growout but you can get pretty close to 20 mbuna in a 29gal if you stock with something like ps. saulosi

For ps. saulosi in a 29 i would do no more than 8-10
