My one friend just gave me two tanks for free, but he didn't know how many gallons they were. One of the tanks are 20 inches long, 11 1/2 inches tall, and 10 inches wide. The other tank is 16 inches long, 9 1/2 inches tall, and 8 inches wide.
Measure your aquarium from the left edge to the right edge. For example, my aquarium measures 18 inches.
*
Measure your aquarium from the bottom edge to the top edge. My aquarium is 12 inches.
*
Measure the aquarium along the side from the front edge to the back edge. Mine is 12 inches.
*
Multiply the three measurements. I got my small calculator and carefully entered 18 x 12 x 12 = 2592 cubic inches. Then multiply that number by 0.00433 to convert from cubic inches to gallons. I got 11.2 gallons of water in my aquarium.
When i did that gallon check thing - it came up that my tank is 22GAL big!! No way! lol - it's way too small to be a 22 GAL, i'm not exactly sure it's an eight gallon.. perhaps smaller.. but i cannot be exact.
chazwick what are the dimensions on your tank? if you give them to us we can help you check if you are right on your calculatioon. A 22g can keep way more fish then an 8g but i've never heard of any 22g's
This info is good to know. I just inherited my tank and even though my neighbor told me it was 55 gallons, I would like to be able to judge for myself. Although these measurements are good for finding out a rectangle fish tank's gallons. But what about a flat-back hex? What is the formula for that?
dslr.cow ~ Thanks for clarifying! I wasn't even thinking geometry on this one. It seems like a silly question now. I just wasn't looking at the obvious. Thanks again!
