how much sump for 220?

how much of a cycle should i have on my 220 with overflow box and return pump? currently i have 500 GPH pump at 6 ft head and it seems to be a good flow in and out, but someone today told me that was way too low... i always figured it was best to have a lot of flow in the tank rather than through the filters. please let me know what you think.

Some people prefer slower flow in the sump because it gives more contact time with skimmer/fuge.... Other people prefer more flow through the sump to keep detritus from settling and add to the flow in the tank (from return)
Neither way is wrong, More of a personal preferance
