Depends what kind of filter.

but... you should clean it as soon as you notice a reduction in flow, Or replace it at least once every six weeks to replenish the carbon. Judging by your fish i would say every six weeks

Anywhere from every month to 6 months, depending on what type of filter. Generally canister filters are changed twice a year, and regular over-the-back filters tend to need more changing. It should say in your manaul for your filter the suggested time period for a filter medium before changing.

Well.. I suppose on a low stocked tank
I just finished cleaning my 2 out. and I think I did it a month and a half ago. Water in the bucket looked like black coffee. yuck.

I do my canister about once every 6-12 months or whenever the flow rate on the ehiem is decreased.
Heavily stocked and planted tanks

not sure what kind of algea eater he is he kinda looks like a fake siamiaes(SP).. Ill get a pic with the web cam when I get the tank moved to the office.... I have a whisper filter with a removable carbon filter
