Hi,
I am very happy to have stumbles into this site! It is nice to see some nice people willing to help out with silly questions:)

I am re-setting up my 30 gallon tank. It has been a few years since I had a tank. I have a few questions. It would be nice if you can help me out with any of them!

Thanks in advance.

I like angel fish. I also like small fish like neons, rasbora, and I like a few gouramis. I was wondering what fish get along best with angels? One last type...clown and khuli loaches are some of my favorite fish too...

I am also trying to pick out a filter. I have had the hanging filters combined with an undergravel fileter but I hear great things about canisters. I kind of like Eheim 2222.

Last but not least, is there any major benifit in getting an acrylic tank? My 30 gal has a crack on the bottom but I have a nice stand. I want to replace the tank.

Thank you so much in advance for any help or guidance that you provide!

Jesse

Welcome to the board Jester.
Congrats on setting up your tank again and welcome back to the hobby.
Others can offer their suggestions for fish compatibility, but I dont see a problem with angelfish, neons and rasboras. When the angels begin to breed the smaller fish are fast enough to escape if they get chased.
Loaches are always good. never kept kuhlis myself.
The UGF's seem to have gone the wayside. canisters and HOB's work well. the 2222 is perfect for the 30. you would not need a HOB if you use the 2222 with a spraybar or otherwise aggitate the surface.
Acrylic tanks scratch easily but are lighter.
Why not just fix the glass crack. it is easy.

I did not even know that you can fix a crack in glass! The crack is on the bottom but you can not feel it on either side of the glass. It is about 2 inches long. A new glass tank is $40, I have no idea what a new acrylic tank costs or where to get one.

Thanks for the help.

Ask your local LFS for a price to fix ur tank - it is usually cheaper to fix then replace.

I would not put angels and neons together - you will find that your neons will keep 'disappearing'...

clowns and khulis should be fine together

I'm setting up a 29g too. I also plan to keep an angel. My stocking plan is one angel, one blue gourami, a school of tetras and a school of cories. Only only one angel is best because more will fight unless they are a pair. Good luck with your tank!

If you buy a young angelfish and don't feed it live food, I don't think you'll have problems keeping it with neons. I agree with what Davy said about a pair fighting. You pretty much have to have one or a group...and a 30G isn't big enough for 3 adult angels and other fish.

Edit: didn't mean to hit "reply" yet lol I was going to say that with acrylic tanks you dont have to worry about cracks or broken seals because most of them are one piece. But I think you should look into fixing yours...is probably going to be way cheaper than replacing it.

Have fun and welcome to the board!! :)

Thanks

Thanks all for this great advice. It seems to me that angels are hard to come by around here. I went to 3 stores and nobody had any anyway! I had a marble angle when I had my first tank and it was beautiful. If I can find one I will get it.

Thanks,
Jesse

Welcome =)
I agree with Tetra Girl that Angels and neons should not be kept together, I know an angel that was brought up with neons and after a while the neons became lunch. I also vote that you get just one angel for a 30 gal. Good luck =)

Acrylic tanks are nice since they are clearer than glass. It isn't too much of a differeance but still, when I look at my acrylic tanks, it doesn't really look like they are even there. Besides they are nice becasue the edges are rounded and there is no silicone involved. The problem with them is that they scratch very easily and they cost quite a bit more especially on smaller tanks. On larger ones though, they can be just as much as glass.
