I saw a gold nugget pleco today (although it was wrongly labeled as a royal pleco).

I would really love to get one of these. From what I have read they live mostly on sinking wafers and driftwood (not much algae). I also read that they are a lot more delicate than other plecos.

Has anyone had one of these?

They were asking $30 for them, which seems like a lot. Anyone else ever gotten better prices?

I payed nearly $40 for my LO66 pleco. She (as I recently figured out) does not eat in public, but will steal the food and move it into her hiding spot.

As for being delicate, when the 30 gallon she was in had an outbreak of some funky time of fungus, for the sake of her, we moved her and our ottos into the 75 gallon. So far, she has found a new hiding spot and seems to be adjusting to the other plecos. Poor girl went from being alone to with the other 5 (HUGE, as in the littles is one is 5 inches) common plecos. We took this step because we did not want to risk her to the fungus or illnesses that are wiping everyone out in the other tank. She seems fine, but we did not want to chance it.

I think if your tank is stable for the gold nugget should be fine. Pleco's seem to be hardy by nature. What size tank would it be in?

I have a nugget currently, and think they are fantastic. Mine goes for bloodorms and pieces of shrimp, and generally scours the biofilm on driftwood, gracel and such. Never seen them eat algae. I think if you've a mature tank they're pretty tough though try to get one thats been around a bit - they often turn up in terrible shape. Most that die later die of starvation, so if you have a busy tank it can be difficult to make sure they get enough food - I didn't see mine for the first 10 weeks after I got him. I keep mine in very soft , warm water so that's ideal, but I believe they're not too fussy about pH and hardness within reason - I wouldn't go below 26 degrees though. Keep the water clean and moving so keep dissolved oxygen up - the only time I've heard of these breeding, they've been in tanks with powerheads pointing at the cave to bred in to get dissolved oxygen really high
