my friend is giving me 40G or 55G im not sure yet, im getting it for free so im not gonna pushy...it will be fresh water... i wanted to know what kind of filter and such i should get..i also wanted to know about fish i def know i want mollys and platys and cherry barbs what other kind of fish could go with them

I personally only use canister filters. They hold more filter media than a HOB IMO, and they are a lot more reliable. For a low stock 55g, a Fluval XP2 or XP3 would be good. Is this tank going to planted with live or fake plants? If you do heavily planted with live plants, then you could try 5 or 6 rainbow fish. If you can't get rainbows, then a large school of harlequin rasboras would be nice too.
