Popeye is often related to water quality and stress, so doing more (larger) water changes, keeping the water a good temperature, and making sure the fish has a place to hide helps.

I've also heard that darkness helps calm fish down, but I don't know if there's any truth in that.

Pop eye

I actually had one of my Gold Star Tetra (Pink fish) die while I was treating him for Pop eye. He was doing fairly well, but the Petsmart Customer rep told me that Pop eye could be a bacterial infection. So I put the Tetra in my 5 Gal Quarantine tank and treated him with small doses of Melafix. he got pretty well after about 3 weeks of treatment. But when I put him back into the main tank he died within 6 hours.

The water change might have been too hard on him.
