I've got a 75 gal. tank, doesn't even have water yet. We're in the process of rinsing all the rocks and stuff, so I thought I'd do a little research while we wait. I keep seeing you guys talking about all these kinds of filters and so I'm wondering what kind of filter should we have? We don't have a lot of room for the hang on penguin filter thing that my husband got and I was wondering if there's a better option. We're going to have a school of Cardinal Tetras and 5 or 6 Discus. I know NOTHING about filters so if you could help me out I'd really appreciate it.

I have never used the XP3, but you will find they are very highly regarded here by those who have them. I use the Fluval filters (305 and 2 405's) and love them. Easy to set up and maintain. I don't think you can go wrong with either brand.

I had an Eheim canister which I found very inadequate for my 75 gal, so I bought 2 Whisper (hang on back) filters and they are easy to clean, quiet and clean the tank exceptionally well.

For the potential bioload, you will need cannister filters. I recommend Eheim, particularly two 2026's, or if you have the money, two 2028's. They are top notch filters that are built very well, very quiet, and will last forever. I recommend two because you can do maintenance on one while the other stays running, helping reduce the biological disturbance from cleaning a filter.

I'd recommend Emperor 400, but since you do not have enough room for the back, you can move the tank/stand forward several inches. As for the canister, I'd recommend Fluval 405. You can get a Fluval 305 with Emperor 280 or 400, your choice or if you want to have the canister itself, get the 405.

Fluval 405 would be my reccommendation. I have a 404 (the largest of its brand when I bought it) on my 40 gall and it works great.
